We’ve done several comparisons on some of the best in-ceiling speakers that you can get. But, when it comes to in-wall speakers, one of the top choices is the Polk Audio RC85i 2-Way In-Wall Speakers!
Why? Well, we’re going to take a look at some of the features, performance aspects and design elements of the speakers. Along with that, we’ll let you know our recommendation on whether or not you should use these speakers in your next home theater or renovation project!
Polk Audio (read more) has been around for some time now and have slotted themselves in one of the top audio brands in the industry. We use their products often and are frequently impressed.
Starting off with the RC85i speaker’s features. Polk offers a few different sizes with these in-wall speakers. You can either get a 2.1-Channel Bundle, 3-Channel Bundle, or 2-Channel Bundle. Additionally, you can choose between a 5.25-inch speaker (RC55i), 6.5-inch speaker (RC65i), 8-inch speaker (RC85i).
For us, we went with the 8-inch RC85i (obviously). In addition to the 8-inch dynamic-balance woofer, you get a 1-inch tweeter as well. The cone is made from a mineral-filled polymer, and a strong composite driver basket. This creates a wider dispersion zone, more sound coverage, and an overall better experience.
Additionally, Polk Audio seals the drivers with a rubber seal to create a better response and, decrease moisture. You can also pair these speakers with the RTI series for an increase in home theater experience, or build your own custom speaker set.
When it comes to build quality Polk Audio typically doesn’t disappoint. And, in the case of the RC85i in-wall speakers that definitely holds true.
The drivers and housings seem to be made from fairly premium materials. Firstly, the installation components are all included and are simple to install. Next, the speaker housing is made form a high-quality composite, and the additional plating is metal.
When it comes to reliability, Polk brings a sense of craftsmanship in their products. They are made with stainless steel hardware, butyl rubber, powder coated aluminum, and painted steel. Additionally, all of the mounts work together to achieve a vibration-free and efficient speaker with the Rotating Cam system.
As far as it goes with performance, the Polk Audio RC85i 2-Way In-Wall Speakers are awesome! They have an excellent amount of bass, especially if you aren’t using a subwoofer. And, you can get a lot of depth out of these relatively small speakers. However, we still would recommend a subwoofer or two for the best outcomes.
Highs are clear without being tinny. And mids are crisp without being too over pronounced. The speakers are continuously impressive with their awesome bass response. You can also use these for a home theater setup as front left and right speakers. Or, you can use them in combination with in-ceiling speakers for a truly whole-home audio experience.
When installing the RC85i speakers, you shouldn’t have too much trouble. They are fairly simple to install and get working. Once you’ve mounted them wherever you want in your wall, then you just need to wire them to your receiver and you’re all set!
These are flush mount in-wall speakers, so you do get a very clean modern look while still being able to hide the majority of the speaker components.

Their installation is fairly straightforward and simple. The sound quality is extremely good for the price, meaning that you can more value. Especially when it comes to bass response, if you need to save up for a subwoofer or don’t want one, you can easily get by with just these woofers.
