Most are smartkey deadbolts are designed to either work with a keypad or smart phone. They allow you to unlock, lock and monitor your door’s status at anytime.
Traditional lock-and-key systems force you to carry around a physical key. With smart key systems, you won’t need to carry around a physical key if you don’t want to. As mentioned before, it really simplifies the experience on every level.

Kwikset Electronic Keypad Deadbolt (92640-001)
The first Kwikset smartkey deadbolt is the Contemporary style 1-Touch Satin Nickel lock. This is the most simplistic version of the smartkey system because it doesn’t have a door handle.

This contemporary electronic keypad features a motorized driven deadbolt with 1-touch locking. It also has low battery indication and promotes easy install.
It is designed to be used on exterior doors and still has a traditional lock-and-key if needed.
The Kwikset smartkey deadbolt has several customization features available to you. You can customize an automatic lock function that locks after 10-99 seconds. This definitely can give you some peace of mind when leaving the house or having kids lock up.

Additionally, there are 6 customizable codes along with temporary codes. Temporary codes are very useful when visitors or service individuals need access.
There is an alarm that sounds after 5 consecutive failed entries and deactivates the keypad for 45 seconds.

AmazonBasics also has an electronic keypad deadbolt door lock similar to this one by Kwikset. Between the two, I appreciate the design from Kwikset more. However, the AmazonBasic’s one is more affordable.
The batteries last several months before having to replace them. It is very reliable, not having any issues over 12-16 months. The guest codes are a major help especially when you’re not home. It has a fairly easy installation with the manual and included allen hex key. And best of all, it works when the power is out because it runs on batteries!
Kwikset Smartkey Deadbolt Keypad with Keyless Entry (99170-004)

This Kwikset lock is by far my favorite from a design standpoint. It is a SmartCode Keypad with Keyless Entry. Similar to the others, however with an included built-in Halifax door handle.
The Kwikset smartkey deadbolt keypad features 30 customizable user codes! This absolutely blows the other ones out of the water. It also has one-time user codes, guest codes and temporary codes.
In addition, the door handle is reversible and can be installed in many orientations (left or right). There are also 3 separate entry modes.
- Auto Lock: locks after every entry and exit
- Passage: stays unlocked and no key or code is required
- Disable Passage: auto-locks every time and a key or code is always required for entry (for property managers)
Also, the Kwikset smartkey deadbolt features up to a 3 year battery life! This is huge over the other smartkey systems. It is also BHMA certified AAA, which is the highest residential security, durability and finish rating.
Thoughts

This contemporary lock (black iron) by Kwikset is the most expensive smartkey deadbolt with keypad that we looked at. However, it isn’t much more expensive than the others, especially considering it comes with a door handle.
It also has several colors and patterns (traditional vs contemporary) to choose from. All of it’s features really make this a great choice if you’re cross-shopping smartkey deadbolt keypads.
Admittedly, this is the most complicated to install as well (because it comes with a door handle). However, it isn’t that difficult and is definitely worth the time.
