Features

Firstly, this sound bar is a 3.1-channel speaker system. Meaning that there is a center channel (for voices), two stereo channels, and a subwoofer. However, this Definitive Technology system is equipped with 7 high-quality drivers (plus tweeters) to deliver an even more powerful 3.1-channel experience.

Compare it to 3.1-Channel Soundbars from Samsung!

Additionally, you can easily hook this sound bar up to WiFi and the Google Home app. This allows you to update your device drivers and have the best experience available.

With an incredibly slim profile (only 1.75-inches), the Studio Slim 3.1 Sound Bar should fit right-in with most living room setups; giving you a modern stylistic appearance. There is also a brushed aluminum outer shell design. It should match whatever color scheme you’re going for.

Next up, is connectivity. You can either use a single HDMI cable to your TV or connect via other traditional audio connections. However, the HDMI has ARC support so you can control your sound bar and TV with one remote.

Finally, with a built-in Chromecast, you can easily stream any music. With your Google Home app, you can stream your favorite streaming services and completely control your music with voice commands!

Definitive Technology accomplishes this with 7 speaker drivers, aluminum dome tweeters, dedicated channels, DSP-enhanced sound decoding, and an 8-inch wireless subwoofer. As far as bass is concerned, your room can easily be filled with heart-thumping sound.

Aided by the subwoofer, the 7 drivers are incredibly powerful. You get very good sound staging and directional recognizability. In addition, when listening to music, you still have an awesome stereo system.

When it comes to other sound bars in the price range, the Definitive Technology 3.1-channel sound bar beats out pretty much all of the competition in sound quality, feature set, and design.

With the exception of some of the Best Samsung Soundbars in that price range.

Definitive Technology Studio Advance 5.1 Channel Sound Bar

Features

The Definitive Technology 5.1-Channel Sound Bar has very similar features to the Slim 3.1 with a few key differences.

However, you can set it up the same way with the Google Home app. You are able to update your device to the latest drivers, and ensure that all of your music streaming apps are working.

You still get awesome HDMI ARC connectivity for your TV. This means that you only need one remote for your TV and sound bar. It will be able to control both of them. Additionally, you also get a HDMI with no downscaling. So, for content that is HDR10 or HLG supported, you should get true 4K passthrough with full clarity, color and contrast.

The Studio Advance 5.1 Sound Bar still features an elegant modern design. It should easily fit into any setup and fit wherever you decide to place it in your home.

Performance

As far as performance goes, the Definitive Technology Studio Advance 5.1 Sound Bar sounds awesome. So, you can an additional 2-channels (left/right side channels) and, 2 more speakers.

This sound bar features 9 speaker drivers, aluminum dome tweeters, dedicated channels and DSP-enhanced decoding. You also get a wireless 8-inch subwoofer. While there aren’t any physical rear speakers included, they do use virtualization to simulate rear speakers.

We do prefer physical speakers, however their implementation isn’t bad. Although the sound quality is on-par if not better than the Studio Slim 3.1, we would potentially consider a similarly priced Nakamichi 9.2.4 with Dolby Atmos over this sound bar (based on a price vs value ratio).

Final Thoughts: Studio Slim 3.1 vs Studio Advance 5.1

In conclusion, when it comes to the Definitive Technology Studio Slim 3.1 vs Studio Advance 5.1, we’d probably stick with the Studio Slim 3.1. Although the Studio Advance 5.1 adds two more speakers and two more channels, we really don’t think that the increase in price is worth it.

You don’t get any physical rear speakers with the 5.1 and you do with similar competitors like the Samsung HW-QT60 5.1-Channel Sound Bar (or at least have the option of adding rear speakers).

The Studio Slim 3.1 is the perfect balance of price, performance, and value without breaking the bank.

So, if you’re in the market for a 3.1-channel sound bar in this price range, than the Definitive Technology Studio Slim 3.1 is definitely worth considering!
